Andaman Islands – Curiosities

HERE BELOW SOME CURIOSITIES ABOUT ANDAMAN

  • You can reach the Andaman islands by sea (4-5 days of navigation) or by air, but always starting from the Indian subcontinent. It is not possible to reach these places directly from other countries.

  • Years ago, to enter the Andaman Islands, it was necessary to fill out a 30-day entry permit which was free and obviously added to the visa to enter the Indian territory.

  • When you land, you immediately realize that you have arrived in a place out of the ordinary. At the entrance of the small airport, there are police officers, who check the documents, and have their attendance register filled, plus you will receive a brochure with the regulation to be respected within the territory.

  • The Andaman Islands were colonized by Indians, forcing indigenous peoples to hide in the forest.

  • When you cross some territories with local transports, you will need to go through checkpoints where authorities will formally authorize you to cross those territories that are in fact special territories, territories of the natives.

  • Indigenous peoples live in different islands who refuse any kind of contact with other populations, including Indians themselves, of course. These tribes feed on rice, coconut, and fruit. It is therefore difficult to make a statistic on how many people live in these places. How difficult it is even to estimate the average age of the inhabitants of the islands since they do not register births and do not count the passing years.

  • Many islands have been closed to tourism also due to an accident that occurred in early 2018. A young American approached with his boat on Sentinel Island, with the intent to Christianize the indigenous peoples and the latter as it was easy to predict he was killed.

  • In the Andaman Islands, there is no modern infrastructure network for communications, which is why telephone communications are not always possible and internet connection is a unique and rare asset. In short, ideal for those who want to detox from technology!
